As you age, regular prostate exams are important for
detection of prostate cancer and other conditions.
Maintaining a good prostate health is important for a number
of reasons. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of
death in men. But there are other dangers for men to be concerned about besides
cancer, prostatitis being one of the most common.
What is the Prostate gland?
The prostate is a walnut sized organ that provides the fluid
that carries sperm during ejaculation.
It is situated at the bottom of the bladder.
Normal prostate growth
The prostate gland is
an unusual organ in that it increases in size in an uneven fashion at different
stages during a man's life.
The first growth
phase is completed before or at birth, here it weighs about 1.5 grams.
The second phase
occurs early during puberty and here it weighs about 11 grams.
The third growth
phase occurs during the mid 20s when the weight increases to 18 grams.
Another troublesome
growth phase begins when a man is in his 50s and by the time he's in his
sixties the prostate gland has enlarged to a maximum weight of around 31 grams.
