Conventional Drugs used to treat Benign Prostate Hypertrophy


Drugs called alpha-blockers the most common treatment prescribed to manage benign prostate hypertrophy symptoms. By relaxing the muscles around the prostate to reduce pressure on the urethra, alpha-blockers usually improve urinary flow.

Common side effects includes stomach or intestinal problems, a stuffy nose, headache, dizziness, tiredness, drop in blood pressure and ejaculatory problems and so on.

Alpha-blockers include doxazosin, tamsulosin hydrochloride.


Another drug called 5-alpha reductase inhibitor is also used  to treat prostate enlargement. It shrinks the prostate gland by decreasing the amount of DHT in the body, it may take 3 to 6 months to effectively relieve symptoms.  

However it has numerous side effects such as decreased sexual desire, inability to achieve erection and reduced amount of sperm. Essentially you are converted to a young woman. 

Examples of this include dutasteride and finasteride.
